Is mugwort safe to handle when pregnant?

DWQA QuestionsCategory: QuestionsIs mugwort safe to handle when pregnant?
Kala Baker asked 6 months ago

I’ve ordered mugwort online just to have just in case I could use some. But after doing a little research (literally very minimal research I’ve been very tired) I’ve seen some things concerning mugwort and it causing miscarriage. I’m pregnant now and I was wondering if it causes issues if it is only handled and not ingested/inhaled when burning.
Does anyone have any insight on this?

Mugwort is not safe to use internally while pregnant because of its potential to stimulate uterine contractions, leading to the possibility of miscarriage. One of the methods of using mugwort to stimulate contractions is by applying a mugwort salve to the lower abdomen, so its active ingredients can certainly be absorbed through the skin. Whether it’s safe to handle while you are pregnant is a matter of dosage. Do not worry about handling mugwort briefly, as you might weeding it out of the garden or pinching a bit of the dried herb into a spell, but if you handle it regularly or for an extended period of time, especially if you are cutting it up, etc., you may wish to wear gloves. Contact with mugwort does cause dermatitis in some people and pregnant women often find themselves more (or less) susceptible to such things, so that is another thing to watch out for.
